TG4 Comes to Town

Last month we had a visit from TG4 who are producing a television programme about various waterways in Ireland and how they are used. This programme will air sometime in September and will feature a few children from local Gaelscoileanna in Trim and Rathcairn learning how to fly fish on the Boyne.

Three committee members, Paul French, Martin Fagan and Denis O’Donovan met up with the group on a wet and windy Friday afternoon at the river opposite Marcie’s. After a brief introduction with us trying to use our best “cúpla focail” and the kids putting us to shame, it was time to start the demonstration.

We began with a basic description of the fly rod, reel, lines and how to set them up. Then we followed up with a casting demonstration and lesson using a piece of wool instead of flies. At this point the girls in the group left the boys way behind in their ability to cast. Then it was over to the river, where again the girls outshone the boys.

The kids all had a great time and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm for both the fishing and our native language. We look forward to seeing the programme on the TV in September.
